L.A. BIG DADDY'S | MAKING MUSIC PROPERLY (est. 2017)
Musical History & Bio : December 2023 - Keith Langerman
THE FOUNDATION: Imagine yourself in Los Angeles, circa 1963. The elegant residences of Lafayette Square have given rise to a generation of musicians who have left an indelible mark on the local community and the surrounding club scene. In this vibrant musical landscape, there may not be one standout star, but rather a close-knit group of friends and kindred spirits who are passionate about their craft. However, when the world needs to pay homage to their exceptional talent, the L.A. Big Daddy’s step forward to ensure that the debt is fully settled.
The L.A. Big Daddy’s are the product of dedicated local music teachers who nurtured the dreams of aspiring musicians. Matt Bragg and David E. Jackson found themselves in the right place at the right time, hanging out in a studio with the legendary Quincy Jones. Soon after Matt unexpectedly found himself in New York City, witnessing the recording sessions of STUFF, a remarkable super-group that featured musicians Gordon Edwards (bass guitar), Richard Tee (keyboards), Eric Gale (guitar), Cornell Dupree (guitar), and Steve Gaddb who were known for creating music that effortlessly blended R&B, funk, jazz, soul, and blues eventually reaching legendary status and becoming some of the most sought-after backing musicians behind the industry's greatest recording artists such as Aretha Franklin, Paul Simon, John Lennon, Big Mama Thornton and Joe Cocker. It is not merely the respect they have earned from their mentors that drives Matt and David, but also the musical memories they hold dear from their beloved City of Angels—Wellington Road. These memories have fueled their unwavering dedication to creating cool, soulful music for decades. Now, their mastery of their craft serves as a testament to the importance of timing. Both Matt and David would be the first to tell you that the key to achieving greatness lies in the delivery of the music—the style, the emotion, the tactile experience—and in understanding what works and how it should be done. It is this understanding that gives birth to truly exceptional songs.
